There's two factors we have to consider when deciding what to put into a smoothie: nutritional content and taste. Being naturally sweet and packed with nutrients, fruit fits the bill for both. We can make our smoothies healthier by incorporating seeds, nuts, vegetables or even oats without too much detriment to the taste of our smoothie, but not even the sweet taste of fruit can mask the taste of some ingredients (even if they may be incredibly healthy). For example, a couple of sardines in your smoothie would be great for your health but you'd have to be absolutely bananas to even consider chucking a couple of those into your blender.
