You probably know that CBD Oil is an extract from the Cannabis plant. It's been all over the news and social media recently, but what actually is CBD Oil? Will CBD Oil make me feel 'high'? And If it comes from Cannabis, how can it be legal? These are questions we get asked all the time, and it's not surprising why: there is a real lack of clear cut information out there. So, to provide a good overview and introduction to CBD Oil, we've tackled some of the big questions - the answers of which should give you more insight into CBD, Cannabis and cannabinoids in general.
What is CBD Oil?
CBD Oil is an extract from the Cannabis plant. The term 'CBD' stands for 'Cannabidiol' - a specific type of Cannabinoid. Cannabinoids are a special group of compounds characterised by their similar shape and chemical composition. First discovered in the Cannabis plant (hence the name 'Cannabinoid'), it wasn't until three decades later in the 1990s that Cannabinoids were also found to be used inside the human body. After they were discovered in humans, Cannabinoids were further classified into Phytocannabinoids (for those found in the Cannabis plant) and Endocannabinoids (for those that naturally occur in the human body). CBD is just one of over 100 phytocannabinoids found to exist in the Cannabis plant that have a variety of physiological effects.
Will CBD Oil make me feel high?
The first thing to understand is that CBD in and of itself is non-psychoactive. When we take an extract from the Cannabis plant, although CBD is the main component, there are other cannabinoids and phytonutrients present. The psychoactive properties of Cannabis come from perhaps the most well known of all the Cannabinoids: THC. So whether or not a particular CBD Oil causes you to feel high, will depend on how much THC is in there.
If CBD Oil is an extract from Cannabis, how can it be legal?
To understand why an extract from Cannabis can still be legal, we first need to realise that the term 'Cannabis' covers a broad range of different strains, each with their own 'Cannabinoid Profile'. That is to say that different strains of Cannabis have different ratios and quantities of the various cannabinoids present. For CBD Oil to be legal in the UK, it must be extracted from what we call 'Hemp Cannabis', which by definition, contains less than 0.2% THC. Having a THC level this low ensures there are no Psychoactive effects, and also explains why some CBD Oils are legal and others or not. As long as the THC content of a CBD Oil is low enough (less than 1mg per container), and the CBD has been extracted from a Hemp strain of the Cannabis plant, it's perfectly legal for you to use.
